Shocking Pay Cut for Kohli & Rohit!

India’s cricketing icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have once again demonstrated that age is just a number, topping the ICC ODI batsmen rankings at second and first place respectively. At 37 and 38 years old, Kohli and Rohit continue to deliver match-winning performances, quashing doubts about their fitness and consistency. Yet, even with their extraordinary displays, the two veterans may now face a pay cut in the coming season.

In the 2024–25 season, both were classified under the A+ category, which includes the nation’s top performers. Following India’s T20 World Cup victory in June, however, they retired from T20 internationals and recently bid farewell to Test cricket. With the focus now solely on ODIs, the BCCI is evaluating the possibility of reducing their grade from A+ to A, which would result in a salary reduction of 2 crore INR. Their current annual remuneration stands at 7 crore INR.

The BCCI is set to hold its 31st Annual General Meeting on 22 December, where the future of Kohli and Rohit’s contracts will be discussed. Alongside these decisions, the board is likely to consider updates to umpire and match referee pay structures and improvements to its digital initiatives.

The shift in player grades also highlights the rise of the new generation. Shubman Gill, India’s current Test and ODI captain, is likely to be promoted to the A+ category. Similarly, senior all-rounders Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja are expected to maintain their positions at the top. For Gill, this marks a significant leap from his previous A-grade status, signalling India’s transition towards younger leadership while still valuing experienced talent.

While Kohli and Rohit face financial adjustments, their impact on Indian cricket remains significant. Both players continue to inspire fans with their performances and guide emerging talent within the team. Their dedication and leadership ensure that, even with a potential pay cut, their legacy remains untouchable.
