Spain Coach Urges Strict Officiating Before Final

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has called for firm and consistent refereeing ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, stressing that no player or team should be allowed to operate outside the laws of the game when Spain face Argentina in the tournament’s showpiece match.

Refereeing has been one of the most heavily debated issues throughout the 2026 World Cup. A series of controversial decisions, questions surrounding the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, and criticism of match officials have dominated discussions during the competition. Several coaches, players and supporters have openly expressed frustration over officiating standards, while some of Argentina’s matches have also attracted allegations of favourable refereeing decisions from sections of the football community.

Against that backdrop, De la Fuente addressed the issue before Sunday’s final, making it clear that he expects the match officials to apply the laws of the game fairly and consistently from the opening whistle to the final minute.

Spain and Argentina are scheduled to meet in the World Cup final on Sunday, 19 July, at a stadium in New Jersey. Speaking to the Spanish sports newspaper Sport before the decisive encounter, De la Fuente commented on the appointment of Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, who has been entrusted with officiating the final.

Vinčić is no stranger to Argentina on the World Cup stage. He also refereed Argentina’s opening match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Saudi Arabia produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises with a dramatic 2-1 victory over the eventual world champions.

Explaining his expectations, the Spain manager said a referee must not show unnecessary leniency or permit actions that fall outside the rules of football.

“A referee cannot allow any relaxation in the application of the laws or permit players to cross the boundaries of what is acceptable in football,” De la Fuente said. “Those limits must be respected throughout the match.”

Despite his comments, the Spanish coach emphasised that he has complete confidence in the officials selected for the final. He also underlined that his greatest confidence lies in his own squad and their preparation for the biggest fixture in international football.

“I have complete trust in the referees,” he said. “But I have even greater trust in my players because we know how to prepare for and approach a match of this magnitude.”

Looking ahead to the contest itself, De la Fuente described the final as a meeting between two of the strongest national teams in world football. He believes both sides possess exceptional technical quality and attacking talent, raising expectations for an entertaining and highly competitive encounter.

According to the Spain coach, supporters around the world should witness a match worthy of a World Cup final, with both teams striving to produce their best football. He expressed hope that the referee would manage every significant moment with authority and consistency, allowing the players to decide the outcome through their performances rather than controversial officiating decisions.
