Suspect Apprehended by Family After Alleged Assault on Child

A 35-year-old man has been arrested in the Jatrabari area of the capital after allegedly attempting to sexually assault an 11-year-old child. The suspect, identified as Mohammed Rubel, was spotted and pursued by the victim’s family before being detained with the assistance of on-duty traffic police officers. He has since been handed over to the local station police.

The media and public relations division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed the details of the incident on Saturday. According to the DMP, citing reports from the Jatrabari traffic zone, Rubel was an acquaintance of the victim’s family, and they resided in the same neighbourhood.

The alleged incident took place on Wednesday, 15 July, at around 9:00 pm. Rubel reportedly targeted the young child inside the bathroom of a residence in the Mir Hazirbagh area of Jatrabari, attempting to assault the victim by force. The child’s screams alerted nearby residents and family members, who rushed to the scene. Realising he was about to be caught, Rubel fled the premises immediately, evading initial capture.

Following the disturbing event, the distressed family began searching for the suspect. The breakthrough came on Friday afternoon at approximately 3:00 pm, when family members spotted Rubel near the Dholairpar roundabout. Recognising the suspect, they immediately gave chase, drawing the attention of bystanders and law enforcement personnel stationed nearby.

Noticing the pursuit, Sergeant Mohammed Abdullah-Al-Nomani and Constable Nur Islam from the Wari traffic division intervened swiftly. The officers intercepted and secured the fleeing suspect on the spot. Jatrabari district police were subsequently notified, and a team arrived shortly after to take Rubel into formal custody.

The victim’s father has filed a formal case with the Jatrabari Police Station under the relevant sections of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Legal proceedings moved forward rapidly, and Rubel was officially shown arrested in connection with the case before being produced in court at 3:00 pm on Saturday. Local authorities have reassured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to ensure justice is served, while the community remains on high alert regarding child safety measures in urban residential zones.
