A court in Tangail has sentenced a man to death for murdering his wife following a domestic dispute, bringing a tragic conclusion to a years-long marital conflict. Senior District and Sessions Judge Hafezur Rahman delivered the capital punishment verdict on Sunday afternoon, drawing strict accountability for a crime that shook the local community.
According to court records and case details, the convict, 37-year-old Shahinur Rahman—the son of Samad Mia from the Basail Upazila of Tangail—was married to the victim, Swapna, approximately fifteen years ago. From the outset, their marital journey was marred by frequent quarrels and persistent misunderstandings. What began as domestic friction gradually escalated over the years, culminating in a fatal confrontation on the morning of 5 October 2019.
On that fateful morning, an argument broke out between Shahinur and Swapna. As the verbal altercation intensified, the situation turned violent. Shahinur physically assaulted his wife, inflicting severe and critical injuries across multiple parts of her body before fleeing the scene to evade immediate capture.
Neighbours and local residents, alerted by the commotion, rushed to the property and discovered the victim in a critical state. They promptly transported Swapna to the Tangail General Hospital for emergency medical intervention. However, upon arrival, the duty medical officers examined her and formally pronounced her dead.
In the wake of the tragedy, the victim’s father, Monnan Mia, lodged a formal murder complaint at the Basail Police Station, naming Shahinur Rahman as the sole accused. Law enforcement agencies subsequently investigated the incident and submitted a chargesheet to the judiciary, initiating a formal trial process.
During the judicial proceedings, the court recorded testimonies from thirteen witnesses, meticulously examining the sequence of events and medical evidence. Convinced by the weight of the evidence presented, the judge found Shahinur Rahman guilty of intentional homicide and handed down the death sentence. In addition to the capital punishment, the court ordered the convict to pay a financial penalty of one hundred thousand taka.
Court Inspector Azharul Islam confirmed the details of the verdict to reporters, noting that the accused was physically present in the courtroom when the judgement was delivered. Following the pronouncement, police escorts transferred Shahinur Rahman back to the district jail under heavy security to await his sentence.
