Teacher Candidates Stage Shahbagh Protest

A group of candidates who have been provisionally selected as assistant teachers under the Primary Assistant Teacher Recruitment 2025 programme staged a sit-in protest on Sunday in Dhaka, demanding immediate issuance of appointment letters. The demonstration took place on the road in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh, a central hub frequently used for public gatherings and protests.

Although the programme was scheduled to begin at 11:00 am, protesters began occupying the area earlier than planned, blocking parts of the road. As the situation developed, police attempted to disperse the crowd and clear the roadway, which led to brief verbal exchanges and minor pushing and shoving between law enforcement personnel and the demonstrators. The situation was later brought under control, and the protesters agreed to continue their assembly within a police-controlled barricaded area.

During the protest, the participants raised several slogans, including “Our only demand is appointment letters” and “Who are you, who am I? We are teachers,” reflecting their demand for immediate recruitment formalities to be completed.

The demonstrators announced that further programmes would be declared following the current gathering, depending on the response from the authorities concerned.

Recruitment Process Overview

The recruitment process for assistant teachers involved multiple stages, beginning with a nationwide written examination held on 9 January across 61 districts, excluding the three hill districts. A large number of candidates participated, reflecting the competitive nature of the process.

Subsequently, candidates who passed the written examination proceeded to the oral test phase. The final results were published on 8 February, in which 14,384 candidates were provisionally selected for appointment across government primary schools. Despite the announcement of results, candidates report that appointment letters and official joining instructions have yet to be issued, more than two and a half months after the publication of the final list.
