Three Die in Rangpur Alcohol Incident

In Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur, Bangladesh, three people have died following the consumption of alcohol, while two others remain in critical condition at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The matter was confirmed on Monday morning (1 June) by Mithapukur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ershad Hossain.

The deceased have been identified as Shattar Mia (50) of Satventi Enayetpur village under Kafrikhal Union, son of the late Tamiz Uddin; Huzur Ali (45) of Buzruk Jhaloi area, son of the late Motiar Mia; and Saju Mia (55) of Sangramapur Beltala area, son of the late Kofur Uddin.

According to police and local sources, a group of individuals consumed alcohol together on Sunday night in the Balarhat market area. After returning to their respective homes, they gradually became ill. Initially, the symptoms were not considered severe, but their conditions deteriorated over time.

Locals reported that the affected individuals experienced vomiting, dizziness, breathing difficulties, and eventually loss of consciousness. Family members attempted to take them to hospital, but Shattar Mia and Saju Mia died before arrival. Huzur Ali later died while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Two other individuals who were also part of the same incident are currently receiving treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Medical staff are closely monitoring their condition, although no official update has been provided regarding their health status. Local accounts suggest that they remain in a critical state.

Local Union Parishad member Md. Muidul Islam stated that the deaths were believed to have resulted from alcohol consumption. He also noted that he had heard claims suggesting an attempt by family members to avoid post-mortem examinations by withholding information, although this has not been officially confirmed by authorities.

Following the incident, officials from Mithapukur Upazila administration and police visited the scene. They spoke with local residents and gathered preliminary information regarding the sequence of events.

OC Ershad Hossain stated that police were aware of the incident and that an investigation was underway to determine the exact cause of death and to identify the source of the alcohol allegedly consumed. He added that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

Authorities have not yet released any forensic or toxicological report, and the investigation remains ongoing.
