Former US President Donald Trump has escalated his criticism of Ukraine, claiming the country has shown “zero gratitude” towards American support amid the Russia–Ukraine war. The comments were made on Sunday through his social media platform Truth Social, reflecting his continued advocacy for Ukraine to accept a US–Russia-proposed peace plan.
The remarks coincided with ongoing discussions in Geneva concerning a 28-point agreement designed to halt hostilities. Ukrainian, European, and American officials have been actively involved in the talks, which US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described as “highly productive and significant.”
Trump highlighted the humanitarian toll of the nearly four-year conflict while also taking aim at President Joe Biden’s handling of US foreign policy, though he refrained from directly criticising Moscow. The plan reportedly requires Ukraine to relinquish control of parts of its eastern territories to Russia and reduce the size of its armed forces. Additionally, US military assistance to Ukraine would be curtailed. Ukrainian authorities and allied nations have warned that these conditions could be viewed as a form of enforced surrender.
Earlier in the week, Trump insisted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky must comply with the plan, suggesting that refusal would leave him to confront Russia alone. He noted that the agreement is not final, but urged swift acceptance. On Sunday, he also criticised European countries for continuing to purchase Russian fuel, despite the conflict.
Trump described Joe Biden as “cunning,” claiming that the former president supplied Ukraine with weapons at no cost. Commenting on Vladimir Putin, he remarked that the Russian president was able to launch the invasion because a “sleeping Joe Biden” occupied the White House. These statements underline Trump’s consistent positioning that the United States’ support for Ukraine has been undervalued and that the ongoing conflict requires a reevaluation of international diplomacy.
