The Bangladesh Coast Guard has apprehended two active associates of the notorious ‘Karim Sharif’ forest bandit gang during a targeted raid in the Sundarbans. The operation, which took place in the early hours of Saturday (18 December), resulted in the seizure of a single-barrelled shotgun, three rounds of live ammunition, and four spent bullet casings. The detainees have been identified as Farooq Bepari (30) and Imdadul Bepari (27), both residents of Mongla. Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq, the Media Officer for the Coast Guard, confirmed the details of the operation on Saturday morning.
Acting on a confidential tip-off, the Coast Guard learned that members of the Karim Sharif gang were lurking in the Bhaijora Canal area near the Pashur River in Mongla, presumably planning a robbery. Following this intelligence, a specialised team from the Coast Guard West Zone conducted a swift raid at approximately 6:00 am on Saturday. Despite attempting to flee the scene, the two suspects were successfully chased down and detained by the officers. A thorough search of the vicinity led to the recovery of the weapon and ammunition, which were hidden for use in criminal activities.
During initial interrogation, the suspects confessed to their long-term involvement with the Karim Sharif gang, which has been a source of terror for local fishermen and forest-dwellers. They reportedly served as primary logistical coordinators, supplying firearms, ammunition, and rations to the bandits deep within the forest, as well as assisting in the kidnapping of fishermen for ransom. Although the Sundarbans was previously declared free of forest bandits, certain splinter groups have recently attempted to resume their illicit operations. The Coast Guard has stated that the detainees and the seized evidence are being prepared for handover to the local police for formal prosecution. The force remains committed to maintaining a robust presence in the mangrove forest to safeguard the environment and the livelihoods of those who depend on it.
