A disturbing incident of sexual harassment and assault on a moving bus has been reported in Uttara, a suburb of the Bangladeshi capital. On Friday afternoon (28 November), a 24-year-old woman lodged a general diary (GD) at Uttara West Police Station, naming nine to ten unidentified individuals involved in the attack.
According to the GD, the victim had boarded a bus from Kawran Bazar en route to Uttara House Building and had fallen asleep in her seat. At that time, a male passenger seated beside her allegedly touched her inappropriately. When she protested, the assailants reportedly became aggressive.
The attackers then reportedly locked the bus doors, physically assaulted her, and caused injuries. Two elderly passengers who attempted to intervene were also threatened and intimidated. As the perpetrators left the bus, the woman was allegedly subjected to threats to her life. She subsequently received initial treatment at the Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara-Azampur.
Speaking to local media, the victim expressed her shock and frustration. “Even in 2025, women are still vulnerable to harassment in public spaces. They could have killed me. I demand the maximum punishment for those responsible. The government must ensure that women can travel safely,” she said.
Uttara West Police investigation officer Mohammad Ullah Faisal confirmed the receipt of the general diary and assured that the matter is being taken seriously. The incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding women’s safety on public transport and the urgent need for stricter security measures.
