In Begumganj, a sub-district of Noakhali, a 20-year-old man, Md. Arif Hossain, was fatally stabbed following a dispute over a cricket game played with wagers. The violent confrontation also left two others seriously injured. Police and local sources report that tensions had been escalating over trivial disagreements surrounding the game.
The incident occurred on Friday, 30 January, at approximately 7:30 pm in Rugurampur village, Ward No. 3 of Jiratoli Union. Arif, a resident of Kutubpur village within the same union, was the son of Siraj Mia of Banchharam House.
Local reports indicate that Arif had been working in Dhaka at his uncle’s factory and had returned home roughly a week prior to the incident. The dispute began on Thursday afternoon when several local youths were playing cricket with wagers behind Arif’s house. A disagreement between the teams escalated, and Arif intervened in an attempt to mediate. This provoked Pradim, a local youth, who reportedly assaulted Arif later that same evening at a nearby tea shop. Neighbours initially managed to calm the situation temporarily.
However, tensions resurfaced on Friday evening. According to witnesses, Pradim and several associates attacked Arif again in Rugurampur. During the assault, Arif was stabbed in the left side of his chest, sustaining life-threatening injuries. Two others, his cousins Umair (21) and Omar (22), were also wounded in the attack.
The injured were rushed by local residents to Noakhali General Hospital, a 250-bed facility. Despite emergency treatment, Arif was pronounced dead by the attending physicians.
Speaking to the press, Arif’s elder brother, Akil Hossain, stated, “When my brother tried to prevent the dispute over the cricket match, Pradim (21) and Saiful, along with several others, attacked him on Thursday evening. They returned on Friday and assaulted him again, stabbing my cousins Umair and Omar as well.”
The Officer-in-Charge of Begumganj Police Station, Mr. Shamsuzzaman, confirmed the incident, noting that the dispute over gambling-based cricket had resulted in this fatal outcome. “Our team has inspected the scene. Upon receiving a formal complaint, we will take the necessary legal action,” he said.
