291 MPs Join Nearly 46-Hour Budget Debate

A total of 291 Members of Parliament took part in the general discussion on Bangladesh’s proposed national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year, with deliberations spanning 45 hours and 51 minutes before the Jatiya Sangsad approved the country’s largest-ever budget.

According to officials at the National Parliament Secretariat, the lengthy debate reflected broad participation from both treasury and opposition benches as lawmakers scrutinised the government’s fiscal priorities ahead of the passage of the Tk 938,000 crore national budget on Tuesday.

The figures released by the Secretariat show that members of the ruling party accounted for the majority of the debate. A total of 200 government MPs spoke for a combined 32 hours and three minutes, while 91 opposition lawmakers contributed 13 hours and 48 minutes to the discussion.

The debate formed one of the most significant parliamentary proceedings of the budget session, providing legislators with an opportunity to assess the government’s proposed expenditure, revenue collection plans, sectoral allocations and broader economic strategy for the upcoming financial year.

Budget debates are a key feature of Bangladesh’s parliamentary process. During these discussions, MPs from both government and opposition parties raise concerns, offer recommendations and highlight constituency-specific issues before the Finance Bill and Appropriation Bill are considered for final approval.

Following the conclusion of the debate, Parliament passed the Tk 938,000 crore national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year, completing the constitutional process required for the implementation of the government’s financial plan for the new fiscal year.

The Parliament Secretariat also released statistics relating to the discussion on the supplementary budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year, which preceded the debate on the proposed national budget.

According to the official figures, 25 Members of Parliament participated in the supplementary budget discussion. Of them, 18 belonged to the ruling party, while seven represented the opposition. That debate continued for three hours and three minutes before Parliament concluded its deliberations.

Taken together, the discussions on both the supplementary budget and the proposed national budget saw the participation of 316 lawmakers.

The combined duration of the two debates reached 48 hours and 51 minutes, making the budget session one of the most extensive parliamentary discussions of the year.

The figures also highlight the distribution of speaking time between the government and opposition. While ruling party members naturally occupied a larger share of the debate due to their numerical strength in Parliament, opposition lawmakers also used the proceedings to examine the government’s fiscal policies and place their views on record.

Budget debates in Parliament serve not only as a constitutional requirement but also as an important mechanism for democratic accountability. They allow elected representatives to evaluate government spending priorities, question proposed allocations and advocate increased funding for sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure and social welfare.

The discussions also provide ministers with an opportunity to respond to concerns raised by lawmakers before the budget receives final parliamentary approval.

With the passage of the 2026–27 national budget, Parliament has concluded the formal legislative process for the country’s principal financial document, paving the way for the implementation of government expenditure and revenue measures in the new fiscal year.

The participation of 316 MPs across the budget and supplementary budget debates, together with nearly 49 hours of deliberations, underscores the scale of parliamentary engagement in reviewing the government’s fiscal agenda before its adoption.
