Krishak Dal Leader Maimed in Brutal Rajshahi Ambush

A sense of profound unease has settled over Charghat Upazila in Rajshahi following a savage assault on a local political figure. Biraj Ali, the General Secretary of the Nimpara Union Krishak Dal, was targeted in a calculated ambush on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in life-altering injuries that have sent shockwaves through the community.

The Ambush at Ramchandrapur

The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 PM on 11 February near the Ramchandrapur cemetery. Mr Ali, 47, a dedicated activist for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a key supporter of former parliamentary candidate Abu Sayeed Chand, was returning home after gathering fodder for his livestock.

Witnesses recount a chillingly professional hit. As Mr Ali stepped onto the Kaluhati-Arani road, a lone assailant—obscured by a helmet and riding a motorcycle with a concealed number plate—intercepted him. The attacker brandished a machete (chapatti), launching a frenzied assault that specifically targeted the victim’s limbs.

Medical Condition and Investigation

The brutality of the attack was marked by the severing of tendons in Mr Ali’s hands and legs, a common tactic used in regional political violence to permanently maim targets. Local residents, alerted by the victim’s cries for help, rushed to the scene as the assailant sped away.

While the victim’s family maintains that Mr Ali had no personal enmities, local BNP leaders, including Shahinur Rahman Shahin, suspect the attacker may be a local resident familiar with the village’s escape routes. The precision of the strike and the concealment of the vehicle suggest a premeditated act of political intimidation.

Official Response

Inspector Helal Uddin Faruqi, Officer-in-Charge of Charghat Model Thana, confirmed that police units have inspected the site. “We are investigating all possible motives, including political rivalry,” he stated, adding that legal measures are being pursued to apprehend the culprit.
