Bangladesh produced their highest-ever total in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup, yet a costly missed opportunity in the field and a devastating innings from Shafali Verma allowed India to claim a five-wicket victory in a pivotal Group One encounter in Manchester.
The defeat leaves Bangladesh facing an increasingly difficult route to the semi-finals, while India strengthened their position in the race for a place in the tournament’s knockout stage.
Having won the toss, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty chose to bat first and was rewarded with one of her side’s most encouraging batting displays of the competition. Bangladesh posted 136 for eight from their 20 overs, surpassing their previous highest total in Women’s T20 World Cup history and offering genuine hope of a memorable result against one of the tournament favourites.
The innings began on a disappointing note when opener Dilara Akter was dismissed for four in the second over. Attempting to pull a short delivery from Renuka Singh, she was caught at deep square leg with Bangladesh still in the early stages of their innings.
The setback, however, did not derail Bangladesh’s progress. Juwairiya Ferdous and Sobhana Mostary steadied the innings with a composed partnership that gradually shifted momentum back towards their side. India’s fielders were unusually generous during the powerplay, putting down several catching opportunities that allowed Bangladesh to build a solid platform.
By the end of the first six overs, Bangladesh had reached 40 for one, setting the foundation for a competitive total. The most significant contribution came through a valuable second-wicket stand between Juwairiya and Sobhana, who combined patience with calculated aggression to frustrate the Indian attack.
Juwairiya was particularly impressive, scoring 33 runs from 31 deliveries and striking five boundaries. Her innings came to an end when Nandini Sharma induced a return catch, breaking a partnership that had given Bangladesh much-needed stability. Sobhana followed soon afterwards, dismissed for 22 after attempting an ambitious shot against left-arm spinner Radha Yadav.
Captain Nigar Sultana then assumed responsibility in the middle overs. She looked comfortable at the crease and contributed 32 runs from 27 balls, keeping the scoreboard moving while searching for opportunities to accelerate. Although she was unable to convert her start into a major innings, her contribution proved crucial in helping Bangladesh reach a challenging total.
Late cameos from Sharmin Akter Supta, Ritu Moni and Swarna Akter added useful runs in the closing overs, lifting Bangladesh to 136 for eight and giving their bowlers something to defend.
For a brief moment, it appeared Bangladesh might seize control of the contest. In the opening over of India’s reply, Shafali Verma edged a delivery from Marufa Akter behind the wicket. The chance looked straightforward, but wicketkeeper Nigar Sultana failed to complete the catch.
The miss proved decisive.
Given a second life, Shafali launched a ferocious counterattack. She dominated Bangladesh’s bowling attack from the outset, finding boundaries with remarkable regularity and ensuring India maintained a brisk scoring rate throughout the chase.
Although Marufa dismissed Smriti Mandhana for eight, India never lost momentum. Shafali’s aggressive approach allowed her side to reach 63 for one at the end of the powerplay, effectively placing the required run rate under control.
The right-handed opener raced to her half-century from only 29 deliveries and continued to dictate the tempo of the match. Her innings finally ended when Nahida Akter lured her out of the crease and completed a stumping opportunity. By then, however, Shafali had already inflicted significant damage, scoring 53 runs from 34 balls, including eight fours and a six.
Nahida briefly revived Bangladesh’s hopes by also dismissing Swastika Bhatia for 23. Rabeya Khan added another breakthrough when she trapped Richa Ghosh leg before wicket for 10, creating a sense of uncertainty in the Indian camp.
Bangladesh had another opportunity to tighten the contest when Jemimah Rodrigues was offered an early reprieve through a missed run-out chance. Like Shafali before her, she made Bangladesh pay for the mistake. Rodrigues struck a rapid 26 from 15 balls, providing India with valuable momentum during the closing stages of the chase.
Although Ritu Moni eventually removed her, India had already moved within sight of victory. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma then guided the innings with calm assurance, steering their side to the target in 16.5 overs and securing victory with 19 balls remaining.
The match underlined both Bangladesh’s progress and the challenges that remain at the highest level. Their batting performance was among the strongest they have produced at a Women’s T20 World Cup, demonstrating greater confidence and resilience than in previous outings. Yet the contest also highlighted the importance of capitalising on crucial moments in the field.
Dropped catches and missed run-out opportunities proved costly against a team of India’s calibre. Shafali Verma’s explosive innings ensured those errors carried significant consequences.
With the group stage entering its decisive phase, Bangladesh must now regroup quickly. Their record-breaking total showed they are capable of competing against elite opposition, but their hopes of reaching the semi-finals will depend on converting promising performances into victories in the matches that remain.
