A 29-year-old man has died from injuries sustained in post-election violence in Kachua upazila of Bagerhat, heightening tensions in the aftermath of a fiercely contested parliamentary race. The deceased, Osman Sardar, succumbed to his injuries at Khulna Medical College Hospital at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to his elder brother, Enamul Kabir Sardar.
Osman, a resident of Parnawapara village in Bagerhat Sadar, was the son of Shahjahan Sardar. He was known locally as a supporter of independent candidate M A H Selim, who contested the election under the ‘horse’ symbol. The fatal altercation reportedly occurred on Friday evening in Chhitabari village, under the Dhapakhali union of Kachua, where rival supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the independent candidate clashed.
Family members allege that the violence erupted following a heated exchange between activists from both camps. Enamul Kabir claimed that supporters of the BNP’s ‘sheaf of paddy’ symbol had been searching for backers of the rival ‘horse’ symbol when an argument broke out. During the confrontation, Osman was allegedly struck on the head with a sharp weapon. He was first taken to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital and later transferred to Khulna for specialised treatment, where doctors ultimately pronounced him dead.
Local police have confirmed the incident and stated that additional officers have been deployed to prevent further unrest. The Officer-in-Charge of Bagerhat Model Police Station, Md Masum Khan, said an investigation was under way to determine the precise cause of the clash and to identify those responsible. As of Saturday evening, no formal charges had been publicly confirmed, though authorities indicated that legal proceedings were imminent.
The violence follows a closely watched contest in the Bagerhat-2 (Sadar–Kachua) parliamentary constituency. The BNP fielded Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain as its official nominee, while M A H Selim, a former BNP district president and former Member of Parliament, ran as a rebel independent candidate. Both were defeated by Sheikh Manjurul Haque Rahad, the nominee of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, who secured victory by a significant margin.
Observers note that internal divisions and intense rivalry among local political factions may have contributed to the volatility in the constituency. Although the election concluded peacefully in many areas, sporadic incidents of post-poll unrest have been reported in several districts across the country.
