A Rangpur-bound Romna Commuter train was temporarily immobilised on Thursday afternoon (19 February) following an accident in the Rajarhat area of Kurigram. The incident caused a brief suspension of all train services along the route, though operations resumed shortly afterwards after emergency measures were taken to remove the train and reopen the line.
The accident occurred near the railway line adjacent to the local Technical College. According to eyewitnesses, the train collided with a motorcycle that had been parked alongside the tracks. The impact completely destroyed the motorcycle and caused a critical failure in the train’s engine: the main reservoir pipe was dislodged. This malfunction immediately rendered the train inoperative, prompting an emergency halt to prevent further damage.
Railway Director Md. Kibria stated that initial investigations revealed multiple wheelsets were damaged, and the main reservoir pipe of the engine had become detached. He added that the damage could have escalated if the train had continued in operation, and for safety reasons, the train could not be moved under its own power. Using an alternative track, authorities were able to tow the train away, allowing regular service to resume.
Fortunately, no passengers were injured during the incident. Railway officials have emphasised the need for strict caution when leaving vehicles near railway lines to prevent similar accidents in the future.
