Maxwell in Hyderabad sends strong message to team

Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen have made a resounding statement ahead of the 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), confirming their biggest signing to date. On Thursday, the franchise announced the acquisition of Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, signalling their intent to field a formidable squad for the tournament running from 26 March to 3 May 2026.

For the first time in his career, Maxwell will feature in the PSL. Known for his aggressive batting and clever off-spin bowling in the T20 format, he is expected to add both firepower and invaluable experience to the Kingsmen’s campaign.

Maxwell brings an impressive international record to Hyderabad. In 129 T20 Internationals for Australia, he has amassed 2,897 runs at a striking strike rate of 158.42, including five centuries and twelve half-centuries, with a highest score of 145. With the ball, he has claimed 49 wickets, demonstrating his versatility as a match-winner.

Maxwell is no stranger to franchise cricket, having played extensively in the Big Bash League, Indian Premier League (IPL), The Hundred, and the Vitality Blast. Across 502 T20 matches globally, he has accumulated 10,986 runs at a strike rate of 154.16, including eight centuries and 58 fifties, while also taking 196 wickets.

Earlier this month, on 6 February, Hyderabad had already secured another marquee Australian player, top-order batsman Marnus Labuschagne, through a direct contract, further strengthening their squad.

This PSL edition marks a historic change in the league’s recruitment approach. For the first time since its inception in 2016, a player draft has been replaced by an auction system, as part of the league’s expansion strategy. With the addition of two new teams, assembling competitive squads posed a significant challenge, making Hyderabad’s strategic signings particularly noteworthy.

By adding a player of Maxwell’s calibre, the Kingsmen have sent a clear message to their rivals: they are not just participating—they are determined to dominate. With his aggressive batting, sharp fielding, and useful off-spin, Maxwell could prove to be the X-factor for Hyderabad in the 2026 PSL.
