Tensions escalated inside the Bogura District Election Office on Monday when two senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) officials became involved in a physical altercation while submitting nomination papers for the forthcoming Bogura-6 (Sadar) by-election. The incident unfolded in the presence of the party’s nominated candidate, Rezaul Karim Badsha, raising concerns over discipline and conduct within party ranks during the pre-election period.
Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam responded firmly to the episode, warning that any violation of the Code of Conduct or engagement in criminal activity during the electoral process would attract strict legal action. Speaking at his office, he emphasised that the Election Commission (EC) would not tolerate disorderly behaviour at any stage of the by-election, underscoring the importance of maintaining decorum in electoral proceedings.
According to reports, the clash involved Ali Azgar Talukdar Hena, former general secretary of Bogura district BNP, and Sheikh Taha Uddin Nahin, the party’s vice-general secretary. The altercation occurred during the submission of nomination papers for the seat vacated by Tarique Rahman, highlighting tensions within the party over candidate representation and procedural conduct.
Addressing the broader implications, the commissioner noted that any disruption during the pre-election phase falls squarely under the electoral Code of Conduct. “Particularly between the allocation of electoral symbols and the publication of the gazette notification, any untoward incident will be dealt with under the prevailing Election Laws and Penal Code,” he said.
He further highlighted the critical role of field-level Executive Magistrates, who are empowered to take immediate action in response to complaints or offences occurring after the election schedule is officially announced. This measure is aimed at preventing escalation and ensuring that the electoral process remains orderly.
The Bogura-6 by-election is scheduled for Thursday, 9 April, from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. Key pre-election milestones include the nomination submission deadline on 2 March, verification on 5 March, appeal filing between 6–10 March, appeal resolution on 11 March, candidate withdrawals by 14 March, and symbol allocation on 15 March.
