BNP Accused of Judicial Threats: Golam Porwar

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General, Mia Golam Porwar, has accused the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of attempting to undermine the judiciary and manipulate legal outcomes. Porwar made these claims on Thursday, 5 March, during an Iftar programme held at a hotel in Paltan, Dhaka, organised by Jamaat’s Dhaka Metropolitan South unit to honour Islamic scholars and clerics.

Allegations Against BNP

Addressing the gathering, Porwar asserted that the BNP is effectively threatening judicial independence:
“By placing a gun at the neck of the judiciary, the BNP is attempting to obstruct justice. Constitutional provisions are clear: Sheikh Hasina remains the Prime Minister, and many aspects of the elections were not included in the Constitution; even the interim government lacked constitutional authority.”

Porwar further alleged that elements within the opposition are engaging in post-election manipulation and called for a formal judicial investigation into former advisor Rizwana Hasan, citing her alleged involvement in what he termed “election engineering.”

“The post-election disclosures are alarming. Rizwana Hasan’s own words indicate that she was engaged in orchestrating the election process, undermining both transparency and democratic norms,” Porwar said.

Context and Statements by Rizwana Hasan

Earlier, on Monday, 2 March, former advisor Rizwana Hasan appeared on a programme on Channel One. Responding to a question on political influence, Hasan remarked:
“There exists a force which previously altered women’s policy. If part of that force is now within the opposition, my responsibility is to counter the elements that oppose women’s empowerment, equal participation, and gender-sensitive politics. We ensured that such a force could never become mainstream.”

Porwar referenced this statement to argue that the opposition may be attempting to weaken democratic institutions, particularly in relation to electoral and judicial independence.

Political and Legal Implications

Golam Porwar’s statements highlight rising political tensions in Dhaka, with Jamaat-e-Islami accusing the BNP of exerting undue influence over judicial proceedings. Analysts suggest that such allegations may intensify political polarisation, prompting calls for formal inquiries, parliamentary oversight, or judicial review.

The Iftar event also served as a platform for Jamaat leaders to emphasise the importance of upholding constitutional mandates, defending judicial independence, and ensuring the integrity of governance post-election. Porwar’s remarks underscore concerns over the influence of partisan political forces within the justice system and the potential risks posed to democratic processes.

Broader Context

Experts observing the political climate in Bangladesh warn that public claims of judicial intimidation can have far-reaching consequences. They may increase public mistrust in both electoral and judicial institutions, complicating efforts to maintain political stability and protect civil governance.

Porwar’s allegations come at a time when Bangladesh is navigating the aftermath of national elections, debates over constitutional reforms, and heightened scrutiny of the role of political actors in safeguarding democratic and judicial norms.
