Teenager Found Dead in Hathazari Apartment

A teenage girl was found dead in apparent hanging at a rented apartment in Hathazari, a suburban area of Chattogram, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

The deceased has been identified as Munni Akter (17), daughter of Md Bahadur of Ward No. 6 under Gordowara Union in Hathazari Upazila. According to family members and local residents, Munni had been living with her parents and siblings for several years in a rented flat at Ma Mansion, located in the West Fotika area under Hathazari Municipality.

Police said the body was recovered late on Wednesday night (11 March) after family members became concerned when the teenager remained inside her room for an unusually long time without responding to repeated calls.

According to preliminary accounts from relatives and neighbours, Munni entered her bedroom earlier in the evening. As time passed and she failed to respond to knocks on the door or verbal calls, her family grew increasingly alarmed. Suspecting that something might be wrong, they sought assistance from local residents and eventually informed the police.

Upon receiving the report, officers from Hathazari Model Police Station rushed to the residence. With the help of local people, police forced open the locked bedroom door. Inside the room, Munni was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan.

The body was subsequently recovered and taken into police custody. Officials conducted an initial inquest at the scene before transferring the body to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Sub-Inspector Md Nazmul Hasan of Hathazari Model Police Station confirmed the incident on Thursday (12 March). He stated that the inquest report had been prepared in accordance with legal procedures and that the autopsy would help determine the precise cause of death.

Although the exact motive behind the incident remains unclear, local residents have suggested that a minor family disagreement may have preceded the tragedy. According to their accounts, Munni reportedly asked her younger brother for permission to use his laptop shortly before the incident. When he declined, the two allegedly engaged in a brief argument.

Neighbours believe the disagreement may have upset the teenager, after which she went into her room and closed the door. Some residents speculate that the emotional distress caused by the altercation may have contributed to her decision to take the drastic step, though authorities emphasise that such claims remain unverified.

Police officials have cautioned against drawing premature conclusions until the investigation and medical examination are completed. Investigators are currently speaking with family members and neighbours in an effort to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the incident.

Officer-in-Charge Md Zahidur Rahman of Hathazari Model Police Station said an unnatural death case has been registered in connection with the matter, in accordance with legal procedures. He added that further steps will be taken depending on the findings of the post-mortem report and the outcome of the investigation.

The tragic death has left the local community in shock. Residents of the apartment building described Munni as a quiet and reserved teenager who lived with her family and was rarely involved in conflicts.

Authorities say the results of the forensic examination are expected to provide clearer insights into the cause and circumstances of her death.
