Eastern Bank PLC has recognised a group of women entrepreneurs for their outstanding performance in repaying business loans obtained under the Small Enterprise Refinance Scheme for Women Entrepreneurs, an initiative introduced by Bangladesh Bank to strengthen female participation in the country’s small and medium enterprise sector.
The recognition ceremony took place at the Chattogram office of the bank, where several of the honoured entrepreneurs gathered to celebrate their achievements. The event acknowledged women who had successfully repaid their loans under the scheme and subsequently received incentives provided through the central bank’s refinancing programme.
Senior officials from the bank attended the ceremony and praised the entrepreneurs for their determination, business discipline, and commitment to responsible financial management. Among those present were Salekeen Ibrahim, Head of Asset at the bank, and Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Branch Area Head for Chattogram. They congratulated the entrepreneurs and highlighted the growing role of women in driving small business growth across the country.
According to the bank, a total of 52 women entrepreneurs were recognised under the initiative. Their businesses represent a variety of sectors including small manufacturing, retail trade, food processing, handicrafts, tailoring services, and other community-based enterprises. Many of these ventures have grown steadily since receiving financial support through the refinancing facility.
Officials noted that the Small Enterprise Refinance Scheme for Women Entrepreneurs was created to reduce financing barriers faced by women who seek to establish or expand businesses. Through the programme, participating banks provide loans to women-owned enterprises at favourable conditions, while Bangladesh Bank offers refinancing support to encourage wider lending to this segment.
Bank representatives emphasised that timely loan repayment is essential for sustaining such development-oriented financing programmes. They added that the recognised entrepreneurs serve as inspiring examples of how disciplined financial practices and entrepreneurial determination can help small businesses flourish.
The ceremony also underscored the broader importance of women’s entrepreneurship in the national economy. Women-led enterprises not only contribute to local employment generation but also support inclusive economic development by expanding opportunities within communities.
EBL officials reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to promoting small and medium enterprises, particularly those managed by women. They said the bank will continue to provide financial services, advisory support, and capacity-building opportunities aimed at strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The bank expressed hope that recognition initiatives such as this will encourage more women to pursue business ventures and benefit from institutional financing programmes.
