A murder investigation may be underway in Khulna after local police detained two brothers following the mysterious death of their 65-year-old mother, Mamtaz Begum. The case has sent shockwaves through the metropolitan community, with law enforcement stepping in after local residents intervened to halt what they perceived as a rushed and clandestine burial attempt.
The unfolding drama began late on Tuesday night within the confines of “Doctor Bari”, a well-known local residence situated on Uttar Kashipur Cemetery Road in the city’s Khalishpur district. Family members reportedly discovered Mamtaz Begum’s lifeless body inside her private bedroom. However, rather than calling emergency services immediately, the family kept the death quiet until the following day. When neighbours finally caught sight of the deceased, the scene was deeply unsettling. Shocked onlookers observed blood trickling from the woman’s eyes and mouth. Crucially, several distinct bruises and unexplained marks were heavily visible across her neck and torso, raising immediate red flags regarding potential physical assault.
Neighbourhood suspicions peaked on Wednesday afternoon when the victim’s eldest son, Masum, and her youngest son, Mehedi Hasan Sohag—a local homeopathic practitioner—bypassed traditional community protocols. The brothers attempted to arrange an immediate, unannounced interment without notifying local leaders, relatives, or mosque officials. In urban Bangladeshi residential areas, communal involvement in funeral rites is customary, making their sudden haste highly unusual. Sensing a potential cover-up given the visible bodily trauma, alert residents contacted the police before the body could be committed to the ground.
Responding swiftly to the emergency call, a detachment from the Khalishpur Police Station arrived at the residence, officially ordered a halt to the burial proceedings, and took custody of the body. The remains were subsequently transferred under police escort to the Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue. Forensic pathologists are scheduled to perform a comprehensive post-mortem examination, which detectives state will be vital in establishing the precise biological cause of death and determining whether the injuries were self-inflicted, accidental, or homicidal.
SM Jabid Hasan, the Officer-in-Charge of Khalishpur Police Station, confirmed that the initial assessment points to a highly ambiguous and troubling scenario. He noted that both Masum and Mehedi Hasan Sohag, alongside several other family members present at the home, were taken into administrative custody for rigorous questioning. Whilst no formal charges have been filed yet, police authorities have reassured the public that a strict legal process will be followed the moment the forensic report provides definitive clarity on how the elderly woman sustained her fatal injuries.
