A tragic incident in Faridpur has claimed the life of a 55-year-old man, Mintu, who was fatally shot by his elder brother, a former parliamentary candidate and local Awami League leader. The shocking event occurred on Wednesday morning, 25 March, around 8:30 am in the Chatul Masterbari area of Ward 8, Boalmari Municipality, Boalmari Upazila.
According to local sources, the elder brother, Dr Golam Kabir, 72, a former central Awami League health subcommittee member and current vice-president of the district Krishak League, summoned Mintu to the railway gate behind the Chatul Fire Service station. The two brothers, who had been embroiled in a long-standing land dispute spanning over two decades, reportedly engaged in a heated argument upon meeting.
Eyewitnesses described a sudden escalation of violence, as Dr Kabir allegedly fired six consecutive shots from his licensed shotgun, instantly killing Mintu at the scene. Villagers rushed to the spot immediately after hearing the gunfire. Angered by the act, they apprehended Dr Kabir, reportedly administering a public beating before handing him over to local police. The crowd also damaged the suspect’s vehicle in their fury.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge Md Anwar Hossain of Boalmari Police Station stated that the dispute over land had persisted for 20 to 22 years. “This morning, a quarrel broke out between the two brothers, which unfortunately escalated. Dr Golam Kabir used a licensed shotgun to fire multiple shots at his younger brother, resulting in Mintu’s death at the scene. The suspect has been taken into police custody, and legal proceedings are underway,” he added.
Local residents expressed shock and grief, noting that the brothers had once shared cordial ties before the dispute over inherited property turned bitter.
