Sylhet May Face 60km/h Squalls

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast the possibility of squally weather in the Sylhet region by 6:00 pm on Sunday, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 60 kilometres per hour. The forecast also includes a likelihood of rain or thunderstorm activity during this period.

The warning was issued in an inland riverine weather bulletin valid until 6:00 pm on 19 April. It advises that areas within Sylhet may experience temporary gusty or squally winds, which are expected to develop from the west or north-west direction.

According to the bulletin signed by meteorologist Md Abdul Hamid Mia, wind speeds may vary between 45 and 60 kilometres per hour. The conditions are described as temporary and may occur intermittently, rather than as sustained weather. Alongside the strong winds, the forecast indicates that rain or thunderstorms may also affect the region.

In response to the forecast, the authorities have instructed inland river ports in Sylhet to display Signal No. 1. This signal is issued as a precautionary measure when distant squalls or adverse weather conditions are expected to impact river navigation. It serves as an early warning for vessel operators to exercise caution while operating on inland waterways.

Signal No. 1 is the lowest level of cautionary signal used in riverine weather warnings. It indicates the presence of potentially unstable weather conditions that could affect safe navigation but does not represent immediate or severe danger. It is primarily intended to alert boat operators, ferry services, and other river transport users to changing weather patterns.
