SATKANIA — A sophisticated extortion attempt involving a staged “honey-trap” and fraudulent journalistic credentials was intercepted by local residents in the Satkania Upazila of Chittagong on Friday, 24 April 2026. Four individuals, including one woman, were apprehended by the public and subsequently transferred to police custody after allegedly attempting to extort 200,000 Bangladeshi Taka from a local practitioner using fabricated compromising video footage.
The incident unfolded at approximately 3:00 pm in the Master Para area of Ward No. 2, situated within the Keochia Union. Following a confrontation with the local community, the suspects were extracted from a volatile public gathering by a responding team from the Satkania Police Station.
Mechanics of the Fraudulent Scheme
The victim, identified as Sajal Kanti Das (commonly known as Sajal Baidya), a local practitioner and traditional herbalist, provided a comprehensive account of the criminal encounter. According to Mr Das, the operation began when an unidentified woman entered his chamber under a false pretext. Once inside, she reportedly initiated sudden and unreciprocated physical contact, embracing him unexpectedly whilst a concealed camera hidden within her bag recorded the encounter to create the appearance of a compromising situation.
Immediately following this staged interaction, three men entered the premises. One of the suspects, identified as Nurul Abchar, presented himself as a professional journalist. The group proceeded to confront Mr Das with the captured digital footage and demanded an immediate payment of 200,000 BDT. The group allegedly threatened to disseminate the footage and publish reports that would cause irreparable damage to his professional and social reputation if the financial demands were not satisfied.
In his subsequent statement, Mr Das noted that out of a desire to protect his honour, he initially proposed a settlement of 50,000 BDT. However, the suspects reportedly rejected the offer, maintaining their demand for the full sum.
Community Intervention and Identification of Suspects
The prolonged presence of the outsiders and the suspicious nature of the confrontation eventually drew the attention of Mr Das’s family members and neighbours. Upon intervening and interrogating the group, the residents concluded that the individuals were members of a coordinated criminal syndicate specialising in digital blackmail and impersonation.
The situation escalated into a public disturbance, during which the suspects were subjected to a “mass beating” by the incensed crowd before the arrival of law enforcement. The four accused individuals have been identified as:
Nurul Abchar (who allegedly posed as a journalist)
Yasmin Akter
Jahangir Alam
Zainal Uddin
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects are residents of the neighbouring Banshkhali, Patiya, and Anwara Upazilas. Authorities believe the group constitutes an organised gang that specifically targets rural practitioners using staged entrapment and the threat of media exposure.
Official Police Action and Legal Proceedings
Manjurul Haque, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkania Police Station, confirmed the detention of the four suspects. He stated that the police intervened to secure the individuals from the public and have placed them in investigative custody.
“Upon being alerted to the disturbance, a police contingent was dispatched to the Master Para area. We have moved the four accused to the station for their safety and for formal interrogation. We are presently awaiting a formal written complaint from the victim, Sajal Kanti Das. Upon registration of the complaint, a thorough investigation will be conducted, and appropriate legal action will be pursued against the perpetrators,” OC Haque stated.
As of the evening of 24 April 2026, the suspects remain under interrogation. Local authorities have issued a public advisory cautioning residents to remain vigilant against such fraudulent schemes. Furthermore, they have urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to report any suspicious activities immediately to the authorities. The equipment used in the commission of the alleged crime, including the concealed camera and purported press identification, is expected to be entered into evidence for the forthcoming legal proceedings.
