In Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila, a man facing multiple serious criminal charges, including cases related to violence against women, has been arrested by the district detective police in possession of illegal narcotics. The arrest took place on Saturday night during a targeted operation in the Rajganj Union area.
According to law enforcement officials, the suspect, identified as Delwar Hossain (35), son of the late Chayedul Haque of Eklashpur Union in Begumganj, was detained with 100 pieces of yaba tablets. Authorities confirmed that the arrest was made following intelligence received by the district detective branch, prompting a swift field operation.
Police stated that a team positioned itself near a tea stall in the Aladinagar area of Rajganj Union after receiving confidential information regarding the suspect’s movements. Upon identifying and searching Delwar Hossain, officers recovered the contraband yaba tablets from his possession. He was subsequently taken into custody at the scene.
Officials further reported that Delwar Hossain has long been known to law enforcement agencies for his alleged involvement in a range of criminal activities. He is currently facing six separate cases at Begumganj Police Station, including charges related to weapons possession, murder, sexual violence, and explosives offences. He had reportedly been absconding in connection with these cases for an extended period while remaining under police surveillance.
Following his arrest, police confirmed that a new case under the Narcotics Control Act is in the process of being filed against him. Investigators are also interrogating the suspect to determine possible links with other individuals involved in drug trafficking and organised criminal networks operating in the region.
Authorities noted that Delwar Hossain has previously been arrested in connection with a widely reported incident in October 2020 in Begumganj, where a woman was subjected to brutal abuse. The case drew significant national attention after video footage circulated on social media, sparking widespread public outrage. Although he was later released on bail, multiple legal proceedings against him remained active.
Local residents have alleged that he continued to exert influence in the area and was involved in various illicit activities, including drug distribution and violent conduct. Police, however, have stated that all allegations will be thoroughly investigated as part of ongoing legal procedures.
