Raghu Rai, Renowned Photojournalist, Dies at 83

The distinguished Indian photojournalist Raghu Rai has died at the age of 83. He passed away on Sunday, 26 April, at a private hospital in New Delhi, according to NDTV.

Rai was widely regarded as one of India’s most eminent photographers and was among the leading foreign photojournalists to document the Bangladesh Liberation War. During the conflict in 1971, he served as the chief photojournalist of The Statesman. In that capacity, he travelled extensively across refugee camps in India, where he recorded the severe hardships endured by displaced Bangladeshis. His photographic work from this period captured the humanitarian crisis faced by refugees living under difficult conditions during the war.

In addition to documenting the refugee situation, Rai undertook considerable personal risk by entering Bangladesh during the war. There, he photographed active combat involving freedom fighters, the return of victorious fighters following the war’s conclusion, and the surrender of Pakistani forces. These images subsequently became an important visual record of the conflict and its outcome.

Rai’s work from the period of the Bangladesh Liberation War has been widely recognised as an important historical archive. It not only documented key events and human experiences during the conflict but also contributed significantly to his professional standing in international photojournalism.

According to his son, photographer Nitin Rai, Raghu Rai had been battling prostate cancer for the past two years. He was initially diagnosed with the disease around that time and had reportedly recovered after treatment. However, the illness later spread to his stomach, which was also treated. In recent times, the cancer had further spread to his brain. Alongside this, he also experienced age-related health complications.

The family has confirmed that Rai’s last rites will be performed at 4 pm Indian Standard Time in New Delhi.
