An Indian citizen has been detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at the Banglabandha land port in Panchagarh after foreign currency was recovered during a search carried out on the basis of intelligence information.
The incident took place on Monday (27 April) at around midday at the Banglabandha Zero Point area, a key border crossing point between Bangladesh and India in Tetulia upazila. The individual, identified as Palash Chandra Majhi, was intercepted while returning to India after completing immigration procedures.
According to border officials, BGB personnel conducted a secondary search after receiving intelligence inputs. During the inspection, they recovered US$24,600 from his possession. He was subsequently detained on suspicion of carrying foreign currency in violation of applicable border and customs regulations.
Officials stated that the individual had already completed immigration clearance at the Banglabandha Immigration Checkpost before being stopped for further examination. The recovery of the currency occurred shortly afterwards during the search conducted by border forces.
Preliminary details provided by authorities indicate that Palash Chandra Majhi is a resident of Khanakul in the Hooghly district of India. He is also reported to have entered Bangladesh approximately one month prior to the incident, although further details regarding his visit have not been officially elaborated.
Banglabandha Immigration Police confirmed the detention and the sequence of events. The officer-in-charge noted that the individual had already completed formal exit procedures when the intelligence-based operation led to a targeted search by BGB personnel.
Following the recovery of the US dollars, both the Border Guard Bangladesh and customs authorities have initiated the process of taking legal measures in accordance with existing rules governing cross-border movement of foreign currency. The matter is currently under procedural review by the relevant authorities.
Banglabandha land port serves as one of the principal land-based transit points between Bangladesh and India, handling passenger movement under immigration control as well as regulated trade and customs operations. The port area is jointly supervised by immigration police, customs officials, and the Border Guard Bangladesh to ensure compliance with border management laws.
