Eight Workers Killed in Sylhet Crash

Eight construction workers were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a pickup van in Sylhet on Sunday morning.

The accident took place at approximately 6:00 am in the Talibazar area of South Surma. According to police, the victims were travelling in a pickup van from Sylhet towards Sunamganj when the collision occurred.

Officer-in-Charge of South Surma Police Station, Md Ashraful, told media that the pickup van carrying the workers collided head-on with a truck loaded with jackfruit. The truck had been travelling towards Sylhet from Chattogram at the time of the crash.

All eight deceased were construction workers. Their identities were not immediately available following the incident.

The information was also confirmed by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, Md Monjurul Alam. He stated that authorities were in the process of collecting the names and addresses of the deceased.

Following the collision, the bodies of the victims were sent to the morgue of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for further formalities.

Road accidents involving heavy vehicles and smaller transport vehicles remain a recurring concern on highways and regional roads in Bangladesh, particularly during early morning hours when visibility, speed, and traffic management can become critical safety factors. However, officials have not yet disclosed the precise cause of Sunday’s collision or whether any legal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the incident.

Police and relevant authorities are continuing their investigation into the crash.
