The political equilibrium of Tamil Nadu has shifted significantly following the conclusion of the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections. On Tuesday, 5 May 2026, C. Joseph Vijay, the president of the nascent Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), formally approached the Indian National Congress to solicit their support for the formation of a new state administration. This move follows an unprecedented electoral showing by the actor-turned-politician, whose party has successfully challenged the long-standing duopoly of the DMK and AIADMK.
KC Venugopal, the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), confirmed receipt of the proposal during a press briefing. He noted that the TVK leadership seeks to bridge the numerical deficit required to achieve a majority in the 234-seat assembly. While the Congress central leadership is reportedly viewed as being “positively inclined” toward the request, the final determination has been left to the party’s state unit.

Analysis of the Legislative Mandate
The 2026 election has resulted in a fractured mandate, the first of its kind in the state in two decades. The TVK has emerged as the single largest party, securing 108 seats—leaving it just ten seats shy of the 118-seat majority threshold. The results for the primary contenders are as follows:
| Political Party | Seats Won |
| Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) | 108 |
| Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) | 59 |
| All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) | 47 |
| Indian National Congress (INC) | 5 |
| Others (including PMK, VCK, and Left Parties) | 15 |
The Congress, having secured five seats while contesting within the DMK-led alliance, now finds itself in a “kingmaker” position. A coalition between the TVK and Congress would bring the tally to 113 seats, requiring the support of only a few additional independent members or smaller secular blocks to stabilise the government.
Secular Alignment and Strategic Deliberations
The Congress party’s potential endorsement of the TVK is heavily influenced by a shared ideological commitment to a “secular” administration. KC Venugopal emphasised that the mandate was a clear rejection of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological affiliates, with the BJP reduced to a solitary seat in the assembly.
To finalise the party’s position, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has scheduled a high-level consultative meeting in Chennai for the morning of Wednesday, 6 May 2026. Girish Chodankar, the AICC official overseeing Tamil Nadu affairs, confirmed that Vijay has already dispatched a formal communique to the Congress President detailing his legislative and social agenda.
“Our priority is to ensure the mandate for a secular government is respected. We are committed to upholding the Constitution and ensuring that no BJP-backed configuration gains a foothold in the state cabinet,” Venugopal stated.
Voter Demographics and the TVK Platform
Market analysts and political observers attribute the TVK’s rapid rise to a significant “surge” amongst first-time voters, the youth, and women. Vijay’s campaign focused heavily on social justice, a “drug-free Tamil Nadu” initiative, and specific policies for youth employment, which provided a distinct alternative to traditional Dravidian politics.
In his inaugural statement on X (formerly Twitter) post-victory, Vijay expressed his gratitude to the electorate. He noted that despite facing initial scepticism and institutional hurdles, the people of the state had supported the party’s journey with maternal devotion.
Formal Steps Toward Inauguration
Following a meeting of his newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Panaiyur, Vijay was officially confirmed as the Legislature Party Leader. He is slated to meet with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday to formally stake his claim to form the government.
A minor procedural adjustment is expected: as Vijay was successful in both the Perambur and Tiruchi East constituencies, he is required by law to vacate one seat. This will temporarily adjust the TVK’s strength to 107. However, with the anticipated backing of the Congress and other secular entities, analysts expect Vijay to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu within the coming days, signalling a departure from the established political order.
