Debt Pressure Triggers Tragic Death in Jamalpur

A tragic incident in Jamalpur’s Sarishabari upazila has claimed the life of a 32-year-old mother of two, amid allegations that financial hardship and prolonged family disputes pushed her to take her own life.

The deceased, Amina Begum, reportedly died by suicide on Thursday night (7 May) at her husband’s home in Pakhimara South Para village under Pogaldigha Union. She was the wife of Shipon Mia, a migrant worker currently employed in Saudi Arabia, and daughter of Abdul Hakim from Enayetpur upazila in Sirajganj district.

According to police and family accounts, Shipon Mia had travelled abroad around five years ago after borrowing money, hoping to improve the family’s financial condition. However, relatives allege that he later became involved in online gambling, which disrupted his earnings and led to a halt in regular remittances to his family in Bangladesh.

As a result, Amina Begum was reportedly left under mounting pressure from unpaid loans and creditors. Family members said she struggled to manage the household responsibilities alone while also facing financial stress linked to her husband’s debts. Over time, repeated disagreements over phone calls between the couple added to her emotional distress.

On Thursday night, she was found deceased at the family residence. Relatives claim that ongoing mental strain, financial insecurity, and marital conflict contributed to her death. Her body was later recovered by police following notification from locals.

Officers from Sarishabari Police Station visited the scene shortly after being informed and subsequently sent the body to the district hospital morgue for an autopsy. Authorities have stated that the official cause of death will be confirmed once the post-mortem report is completed.

A senior police official, Officer-in-Charge Md. Iqbal Hossain, confirmed the recovery of the body and said that an investigation is underway. He added that further clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding the death would depend on forensic findings and statements from relevant parties.
