A violent domestic incident in Kolmakanada upazila of Netrokona has left an elderly father and his daughter-in-law injured after a reportedly drug-addicted man attacked his family over money for narcotics. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday night in Kalihala village.
The accused has been identified as 30-year-old Imamul, son of 60-year-old Abul Hashem of the same village. Local residents and family members said Imamul has long struggled with substance abuse and has repeatedly become aggressive when unable to obtain money to fund his addiction.
According to accounts from the family, the situation escalated late at night when Imamul demanded money from his wife to purchase drugs. Upon her refusal, he began physically assaulting her inside their home. Witnesses allege that the attack quickly turned severe, with Imamul attempting to strangle her in a moment of extreme violence.
Hearing the commotion, his father, Abul Hashem, rushed to intervene. Instead of calming down, Imamul allegedly turned his aggression towards him as well. The confrontation intensified further when he reportedly attempted to attack his father with a sharp weapon brought from inside the house. In fear for his life, the elderly man ran into a room and locked the door, but the assailant is said to have forced his way in and continued the assault, injuring his hand.
Neighbours later intervened and rescued Abul Hashem, who was immediately taken to Kolmakanada Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Medical officials confirmed that he sustained injuries to his hand, including cuts to his fingers. His daughter-in-law also suffered injuries during the attack.
Family members described a long history of domestic distress linked to Imamul’s drug dependency. They said he had previously damaged family assets, including selling or destroying property and even an auto-rickshaw to finance his addiction. The household, once stable, is now reportedly in financial ruin and constant fear.
Abul Hashem expressed deep anguish over his son’s behaviour, stating that the family lives in continuous anxiety. He added that Imamul is the father of two young children, who now stay away from home, often residing with their maternal relatives due to safety concerns.
Imamul could not be located for comment following the incident.
Police have confirmed that they are aware of the matter. Officer-in-Charge Siddiq Hossain of Kolmakanada Police Station stated that appropriate legal action will be taken if a formal complaint is lodged.
