A 10-month-old infant named Wasenat has died after a lychee seed became lodged in her throat in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar. The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 pm on Monday in the West Para area of Bumobilchhari Union.
The deceased child was the daughter of Abu Noman Osmanee, a veterinary practitioner from the locality. According to family members, the incident took place shortly after the Zuhr prayer. The father was feeding his daughter lychee when, after giving her a fruit, he inadvertently left a seed nearby and stepped out into the courtyard for a short time. When he returned, he found that the child had placed the seed in her mouth, and it had become lodged in her throat.
Family members immediately attempted to remove the seed but were unsuccessful. The infant was then taken to Lama Upazila Health Complex for treatment. However, during the journey, the child vomited and her condition deteriorated. Upon arrival at the health facility, the attending doctor declared her dead.
Abu Noman Osmanee stated that he had left the child inside the house for approximately five minutes to feed pigeons outside. During this brief period, the child reportedly picked up the nearby lychee seed and swallowed it, leading to the fatal obstruction.
He further stated that the funeral prayer for his daughter would be held at 9:00 pm on the same day at the Bumobilchhari Union Parishad field.
Lama Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Golam Mostafa Nadim confirmed that the child was already deceased before arrival at the hospital. He added that after examination, medical staff formally declared her dead.
He also noted that the lychee season is currently underway and advised guardians to exercise caution when feeding young children, as small seeds or similar objects can cause airway obstruction and serious medical emergencies.
