Adverse Weather Halts Ferries and Launches at River Ports

Heavy rainfall and turbulent weather conditions across Bangladesh, including the capital city of Dhaka, have compelled authorities to suspend all ferry and launch services temporarily. The decision was implemented on Tuesday to mitigate the risk of maritime accidents during the ongoing period of inclement weather.

Official Suspension and Safety Protocols

The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Shipping, Kazi Arif Billah, confirmed the suspension at 12:15 pm on Tuesday. The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) reached this consensus following a rapid deterioration in weather conditions.

According to Mohammad Salam, Assistant General Manager of BIWTA, the suspension affects several critical water routes, most notably the Paturia-Daulatdia and Aricha-Kazirhat corridors. Operations were halted at approximately 11:15 am on Tuesday as “Kalbaishakhi” (Nor’wester) storms and torrential rain rendered river navigation hazardous.

Impact on Commuters and Holiday Traffic

The timing of the suspension coincides with the pre-Eid-ul-Fitr travel rush, a period during which millions of citizens return to their ancestral homes. Consequently, thousands of homebound passengers have been stranded at terminal points. The BIWTC Aricha office reported that the Padma River became exceptionally turbulent due to the storm, necessitating an immediate halt to protect both passengers and vehicles currently in transit.

To manage the surge in demand during the festive season, authorities had deployed a significant number of vessels. The following table details the fleet allocated to the Paturia-Daulatdia and Aricha-Kazirhat routes:

Current Operational Status

Local authorities have reinforced security measures at the terminals to maintain order and ensure the safety of those waiting. Official sources indicate that services will remain suspended until the weather stabilises and the water levels of the Padma and other major river systems subside to safe navigational parameters.

The BIWTA has advised all vessel masters to remain in safe harbour or anchored near the riverbanks until further notice. While the suspension has caused significant delays and hardship for commuters, officials maintained that the preservation of life and the prevention of nautical collisions remain the primary objectives during this period of atmospheric instability.
