Following her intermediate education at Rajshahi Mohila College, she pursued higher education at the University of Rajshahi within the Department of Bengali Language and Literature. This period fostered her deep involvement in cultural activities, creative writing, and political awareness. She completed her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in 1967, followed by a Master of Arts degree in 1968.

Professional Tenure at the Bangla Academy

In 1970, Hossain began her professional career as a research assistant at the Bangla Academy. Over an extensive tenure, she supervised several major institutional publications, including dictionaries, the Science Encyclopaedia, biographical reference books, and the collected works of prominent authors.

For over twenty years, she also edited Dhan Shaliker Desh, a highly regarded periodical for children and young adults. In 1997, Hossain achieved a historic milestone by being appointed the first female Director of the Bangla Academy. She later expanded her institutional legacy by serving as the President of the organization.

Hossain entered the literary scene as a short story writer, releasing her debut collection, Utsho Theke Nironshor, in 1969. Her novel Hangor Nodi Grenade remains one of the most significant works in modern Bengali prose. The book was later adapted into a critically acclaimed feature film by director Chashi Nazrul Islam. Several of her other stories have been adapted into television dramas for the national broadcaster, Bangladesh Television (BTV). Hossain’s personal life was marked by a profound tragedy. Her daughter, Faria Lara, who held the distinction of being the first female pilot instructor in Bangladesh, died in a plane crash on 27 September 1998 in the Postogola area of Dhaka.
