Indian television actors Akanksha Chamola and Gaurav Khanna, long regarded as one of the industry’s most stable couples, are ending their nine-year marriage. Following months of speculation, Chamola confirmed that the pair have been living separately for the past year and are currently navigating formal divorce proceedings. The announcement has sent shockwaves through their extensive fanbase, given their public profile as an idyllic partnership.
Chamola chose to share this deeply personal development during the premiere episode of the second season of the reality series Look Up. Tasked with disclosing a significant secret, she revealed the status of her marriage to the audience. “Gaurav and I are divorcing,” she stated, adding that they had successfully managed to keep their year-long separation out of the public eye until now. Despite the impending dissolution of their marriage, she emphasised that the decision was mutual and devoid of malice.
According to Chamola, the separation has not bred hostility. The two still maintain open lines of communication. However, she clarified that over time, they realised their long-term goals and visions for the future were entirely misaligned, making them incompatible as life partners.
The couple initially tied the knot on 24 November 2016 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, celebrating their union with a lavish three-day ceremony. For nearly a decade, they were celebrated as an exemplary couple within the television community, routinely offering mutual professional support during critical phases of their respective careers.
However, subtle signs of ideological differences had begun to emerge publicly prior to this announcement. During his stint on the 19th season of the reality show Bigg Boss, Khanna had candidly discussed their differing perspectives regarding family planning. Responding to queries from a fellow contestant, he revealed his desire to have children, whilst noting that Chamola did not share the same inclination towards motherhood. At the time, Khanna stated that because their marriage was rooted in mutual love, he fully respected his wife’s autonomous choice.
The path to their formal separation was also marked by initial denials. In January this year, when rumours of a marital rift first surfaced, Chamola had dismissed the reports during an interview with The Times of India. She maintained that their marriage was stable, claiming that a social media post had been misinterpreted by fans. During that same interview, she also clarified her stance on motherhood, stating firmly that she did not envisage herself becoming a mother and viewed it as a strictly personal decision that required no public justification.
The revelation comes at a busy professional juncture for Chamola, who is currently participating as a prominent contestant on the second season of Look Up. The reality programme features a high-profile lineup of entertainment personalities navigating personal and competitive challenges.
Among her fellow contestants on the show are notable industry figures, including Ram Kapoor, Shivangi Joshi, Sunita Ahuja, Dheeraj Dhoopar, Harshad Chopda, Riyaz Aly, and Sufi Motiwala. As Chamola focuses on her television commitments, fans have widely expressed their sadness across social media platforms, whilst respecting the couple’s dignified approach to their separation.
