A local Awami League leader named in the murder case over the fatal shooting of Chittagong University student Farhad Hossain during Bangladesh’s Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has been arrested by detectives in Magura. The suspect, Mushfikur Rahman Milton, 45, was produced before a court, which subsequently ordered that he be sent to jail pending further legal proceedings.
According to police officials, detectives from the Magura District Detective Branch (DB) arrested Milton on Monday evening during a raid carried out in front of a shop owned by a local resident named Jasim in Jaria village under Sreepur Upazila. Acting on intelligence information, officers located and detained the suspect before completing the necessary legal formalities. He was presented before the court on Tuesday afternoon, where the presiding judge ordered his remand to prison custody.
Investigators identified Mushfikur Rahman Milton as the son of the late Siddik Molla from Mokardomkhola village in Sreepur Upazila. He previously served as the General Secretary of the Sabdalpur Union Awami League. Court documents and investigation records show that he has been listed as the 13th accused in the First Information Report (FIR) filed in connection with the murder of Chittagong University student Farhad Hossain.
Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan of the Magura Detective Branch said the arrest followed a targeted operation based on confidential intelligence. He confirmed that Milton had been transferred to judicial custody after being produced before the court. The officer also stated that law enforcement agencies continue to work to identify and apprehend the remaining accused named in the case.
The killing of Farhad Hossain occurred during the nationwide Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, a period marked by widespread demonstrations, clashes and incidents of violence in different parts of Bangladesh. According to investigators, Farhad, a student of the University of Chittagong, was shot during an incident in Magura and later died from his injuries. His death prompted members of his family to file a murder case against individuals they alleged were involved in the attack.
Since the case was registered, investigators have been conducting a series of operations aimed at tracing those named in the complaint. Police say the investigation remains active and that efforts are continuing to ensure all accused individuals are brought before the court in accordance with the law.
Officials involved in the investigation said evidence collection, witness interviews and other investigative procedures are continuing as part of the inquiry. They stressed that legal action will be taken against anyone found to have been involved, based on the evidence gathered during the investigation. Future legal proceedings will be conducted under the direction of the court as the investigation progresses.
Police also confirmed that intelligence surveillance has been intensified to locate suspects who remain at large. Investigators said any new information emerging during the inquiry will be carefully verified before additional legal measures are taken. Authorities maintain that the investigation is being conducted impartially and in accordance with established legal procedures, with the objective of determining individual responsibility for the fatal shooting and ensuring accountability through the judicial process.
