Ronaldo Hints Current Season Could Be His Last

Cristiano Ronaldo has given his clearest indication yet that his extraordinary football career could be approaching its final chapter, admitting that the current season may be his last as a professional player.

The 41-year-old Portugal forward has spoken about retirement before, but until now he has avoided giving a clear timeframe. In an interview published on Sunday, Ronaldo said: “Maybe this is my last year in football, and I want to leave a great legacy.”

The statement marks a significant change in tone from his previous comments. Ronaldo has a contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr until June 2027, meaning he could potentially remain at the club beyond the season he is now describing as a possible final year. His latest remarks suggest, however, that the length of his contract does not necessarily determine how long he intends to continue playing.

Last November, Ronaldo said he could play for another one or two years. He also indicated at the time that the 2026 World Cup would be his final appearance at football’s biggest international tournament. Portugal subsequently exited the competition after losing to Spain in the last 16, with Ronaldo scoring three goals during the tournament.

Despite confirming that the World Cup would be his final one, Ronaldo had stopped short of announcing when he would retire from club football. His latest comments have now provided a much stronger indication that his playing career could end sooner rather than later.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward also revealed that he has already begun thinking about life away from competitive football. Family is expected to become a much bigger part of his daily life once he finally steps away from the sport.

Speaking about his plans, Ronaldo said he already has a clear idea of what he wants to do after football. He acknowledged that retirement could leave a significant void because football has occupied such a central place in his life for around 25 years. Rather than allowing that gap to dominate his life, he wants to spend more time travelling, enjoying activities such as padel and making the most of what he and his family have achieved.

His comments also reflect the extraordinary length of his career. Ronaldo began his professional journey at Sporting Lisbon before moving to Manchester United, where he developed into one of the world’s leading forwards. His performances earned him a move to Real Madrid, where he spent nine highly productive years and established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in the history of the sport.

During his time in Madrid, Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 appearances, making him the club’s record goalscorer. He later played for Juventus before returning to Manchester United and eventually moving to Al Nassr in January 2023.

His individual honours include five Ballon d’Or awards, while his career has also been defined by major club and international achievements. For Portugal, he has remained a central figure for many years and has represented the national side across multiple generations of players.

The timing of the interview was also notable. It was published five days before Ronaldo’s marriage to his long-term partner, Georgina Rodriguez, in Cascais, Portugal. With his personal life entering a new chapter, his comments about retirement have added to the sense that his football career may also be entering its final stage.

Ronaldo’s future has also been discussed alongside that of his long-time rival Lionel Messi. The Argentine recently expressed uncertainty over how much longer he would continue playing, particularly following the death of his father, Jorge.

For supporters who have watched Ronaldo’s career unfold from his early days in Lisbon through his years in England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia, the prospect of his retirement represents the possible end of one of football’s defining eras.

Ronaldo has not announced a definitive retirement date. His latest words remain an indication rather than a formal decision. Yet for the first time, the possibility of seeing him leave professional football within the current season appears considerably more real.
