Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to undertake a state visit to India from 4–5 December at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit, taking place in New Delhi, is designed to strengthen bilateral relations and allow discussions on international and regional issues of mutual interest.
A joint statement from the Kremlin and India’s Ministry of External Affairs on 28 November confirmed the visit. It highlighted that President Putin will meet Prime Minister Modi for extensive talks and hold a separate meeting with President Droupadi Murmu. In addition, several intergovernmental and commercial agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, reflecting the multi-dimensional nature of Indo-Russian cooperation.
The statement stressed the strategic significance of the visit for both countries. It will provide a platform to discuss an extensive agenda covering political, economic, trade, scientific, technological, cultural, and humanitarian collaboration. A major focus will be on consolidating the “special strategic partnership” that underpins Indo-Russian relations, ensuring both nations continue to advance mutual interests in a rapidly changing global context.
Analysts note that this visit builds on President Putin’s previous trip to India in December 2021, which occurred just months before Russia’s military actions in Ukraine in February 2022.
