Tushar Mondal, 21, who gained widespread attention after being photographed brandishing a pistol during a violent clash between BNP and Jamaat supporters in Ishwardi, Pabna, has been apprehended by the Pabna District Detective Police (DB).
The arrest was confirmed in an official press release issued by the district detective unit on Tuesday, 2 December. Mr Mondal was initially detained on Monday night from Dhanbandhi in Sirajganj Sadar Upazila, after several days of evading authorities.
Police subsequently recovered the firearm used in the incident, along with two bullets, which had been buried under sand in Velupur, Ishwardi Upazila, according to statements provided by Mr Mondal.
The young man, son of Abu Taher of Velupur, has been at the centre of controversy due to photographs showing him with Abu Taleb Mondal, Jamaat’s candidate for Pabna-4. While senior BNP leaders have suggested this indicates an affiliation with Jamaat, the party has officially denied any such connection.
The clash in question occurred on 27 November at Char Gorgori Mor in Ishwardi, when tensions between BNP and Jamaat supporters escalated into a violent confrontation. Witnesses report that Mr Mondal openly displayed a firearm during the fracas, causing panic among bystanders. Both political groups subsequently filed legal cases in connection with the incident.
Rashidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of the Pabna District Detective Police, stated that Mr Mondal had been absconding since the 27 November incident. “Upon his arrest, the firearm and ammunition involved in the clash were recovered. Following the completion of legal procedures, he was sent to jail through the court,” he added.
The incident has raised concerns regarding political violence in the region and the use of illegal firearms during confrontations between rival groups. Law enforcement authorities continue to investigate the matter.
