Security has been significantly tightened around Chhayanaut, one of Bangladesh’s most revered cultural institutions, amid renewed concerns over potential attacks and further unrest. Situated in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area, Chhayanaut has long stood as a symbol of Bengali cultural expression, music, and intellectual freedom. Recent incidents, however, have cast a shadow over its tranquil atmosphere, prompting law enforcement agencies to adopt enhanced precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the institution, its members, and the surrounding community.
On Friday, 19 December, the area surrounding the Chhayanaut premises presented an unusually heavy security presence. A visibly larger number of police officers were deployed compared to an ordinary day, with uniformed personnel guarding the main entrance and patrol units maintaining a constant presence along nearby roads and side streets. Law enforcement agencies also intensified surveillance activities, keeping a close watch on any suspicious movement. Local residents observed that the heightened vigilance reflected the gravity of the situation and the authorities’ determination to prevent any recurrence of violence.
Police officials stated that the strengthened security arrangements were implemented to avert any further attacks, vandalism, or disruptive incidents at or near the Chhayanaut premises. Given the organisation’s deep cultural significance and the sensitivity surrounding recent events, the situation is being treated as a high priority. Both uniformed and plainclothes officers have been deployed as part of a coordinated security strategy, and the entire area remains under continuous monitoring.
The renewed alert follows an incident on Thursday night when the Chhayanaut building was reportedly attacked and vandalised. Portions of the premises sustained damage, leaving members of the organisation distressed and deeply concerned about their safety. In the aftermath, Chhayanaut members arrived early on Friday morning to clean the premises and assess the extent of the damage. Despite their determination to restore normalcy, rising anxiety over the possibility of further unrest led to members vacating the building ahead of Friday prayers as a precautionary measure.
Several members have expressed fears that another attack could occur after Jummah prayers, a concern influenced by past experiences and the tense atmosphere that has persisted since the earlier incident. To minimise risk and ensure personal safety, a temporary decision was taken to keep the premises largely unoccupied until the situation stabilises.
Addressing the media, Shah Mostafa Tarikuzzaman, Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Dhanmondi Zone under the Ramna Division, confirmed that security had been reinforced across areas of the capital affected by incidents on Thursday night. He noted that Chhayanaut was receiving particular attention due to its cultural importance and recent targeting, and assured that additional police personnel and regular patrols had been put in place.
He further stressed that Chhayanaut represents a vital part of Bangladesh’s cultural heritage, and safeguarding it is a matter of serious responsibility for the police. Authorities remain on high alert, he said, and are committed to preventing any form of disturbance while maintaining overall control of the situation.
