In a remarkable show of internal party support, at least 170 senior leaders of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) have formally expressed their endorsement for any electoral alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami or other political parties, addressing a letter to the party’s convenor, Nahid Islam.
Additionally, by Sunday afternoon, more than 122 NCP leaders had submitted individual letters reiterating their support for the move. This development comes just a day after a letter opposing the Jamaat alliance from 30 party leaders became public, highlighting a swift internal debate on the issue.
Mohammad Arifur Rahman Tuhin, NCP’s Joint Chief Coordinator, confirmed the figures to The Daily Star, stating:
“Members of our central committee have forwarded letters via WhatsApp in support of a Jamaat-NCP alliance. So far, 170 leaders have expressed their backing, including 122 who sent separate letters. We anticipate more submissions in the coming days.”
The letters underscore the leaders’ stance that, should NCP decide to enter into any electoral pact or alliance with other parties, it would have their full support. They emphasised that the decision, taken in line with recommendations from the Executive Council and endorsed by the Convenor and General Secretary, commands their unwavering confidence.
A key excerpt from the letter reads:
“In the interest of party objectives, national priorities, and broader democratic reforms, we fully support any decision by the NCP to form alliances or electoral arrangements. We trust that your farsighted leadership and political wisdom will guide the party to a timely, acceptable, and unified decision that will strengthen the organisation and enhance public confidence in NCP.”
Among those who have signed the letter are senior figures such as Ariful Islam Adib (Senior Joint Convenor), Sarowar Tushar, Dr. Atik Mujahid, Javed Rasin, Sultan Muhammad Zakaria, Ehtesham Haque, Joint Chief Coordinator Arifur Rahman Tuhin, Senior Joint Chief Organiser Saifullah Haider, Ataullah, Mahmuda Mitu, Ali Naser Khan, Mahin Sarkar, Ashikin Alam, Dr. Abdul Ahad, Alauddin Mohammed, Dilshana Parul, Mahbub Alam, Hafsa Jahan, Foysal Mahmud Shanto, Zobairul Hasan Arif, Barrister Nurul Huda Junayed, and Kailash Chandra Ravidash, among others.
