Dhaka, 30 December 2025 – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced a seven-day period of national mourning following the death of its Chairperson and former Prime Minister, Begum Khaleda Zia. The announcement was made on Tuesday at 10:00 am at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi during a press briefing.
Addressing the media, Rizvi described Khaleda Zia as “the Mother of Democracy, a steadfast symbol of democratic rights, voter enfranchisement, and freedom of speech throughout her long political career.” He confirmed that she passed away at 6:00 am and added, “Her leadership, struggle, and contributions will remain indelibly etched in the history of Bangladesh’s political landscape.”
Rizvi further highlighted Khaleda Zia’s enduring influence on the nation’s democratic movements, particularly in the post-independence era. “Her unyielding leadership in the fight against authoritarianism, her tireless efforts to restore parliamentary democracy, and her commitment to protecting the people’s right to vote have left a legacy that will endure through generations,” he stated.
The BNP’s official memorandum detailed that during the seven-day mourning period, the party’s central and district offices will hoist black flags, members will wear black badges, and religious observances including Quran recitations and prayer gatherings will be conducted. Special condolence books will also be opened at the central office, Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office, and major district offices, allowing citizens, political leaders, and representatives from civil society to pay their respects.
Rizvi emphasised, “This is not only a party’s mourning but a national expression of respect for Khaleda Zia. Her political struggle, sacrifices, and ideals will be communicated to the younger generation, inspiring future leaders and citizens alike.”
