Twin Earthquakes Trigger Warnings Across Sylhet

In the early hours of Monday, residents in Sylhet and other parts of Bangladesh experienced two consecutive earthquakes, sparking widespread alarm. The tremors occurred within seconds of each other, causing temporary panic in homes and workplaces across the region.

According to reports from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake struck at 4:47:39 am on 5 January, registering a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale. Only 13 seconds later, a second tremor occurred at 4:47:52 am, slightly stronger at a magnitude of 5.4.

The epicentres of both earthquakes were located across the border in India’s Assam state. The first originated in Dhing, approximately 35 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface, while the second was traced near Morigaon, close to Assam’s capital, Guwahati.

Dr Mostafa Kamal Palash, a meteorology and climate researcher at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, highlighted on social media that the second earthquake, being of moderate intensity, may trigger aftershocks within the next 48 hours. He added that such aftershocks could occur either within Bangladesh’s territory or along fault lines in the country’s northern and eastern regions.

The following table summarises the key details of the twin tremors:

SequenceTime (Local)EpicentreMagnitude (Richter)Depth (km)
First Earthquake04:47:39 amDhing, Assam, India5.235
Second Earthquake04:47:52 amMorigaon, Assam, India5.430 (approx.)

In Bangladesh, residents of Sylhet and the wider north-eastern region reported feeling the tremors clearly, with many expressing concern about potential aftershocks. Seismologists have urged the public to remain vigilant in the immediate aftermath, advising people to stay indoors in safe locations and avoid tall buildings.

Local authorities have also issued emergency warnings, emphasising that Assam and Bangladesh’s north-eastern districts are seismically sensitive areas. They stressed the importance of preparedness, including having emergency plans and knowing safe spots within homes and workplaces.

Communities across Sylhet are now observing precautionary measures, anticipating the possibility of additional seismic activity over the next 48 hours. While the intensity and location of potential aftershocks remain uncertain, officials continue to remind citizens to prioritise safety and heed expert guidance.
