The Sunamganj police have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of a barbaric assault on an orphaned teenager, with the arrest of a second key suspect. Tarikul Islam was apprehended by law enforcement following a manhunt across the Tahirpur region. On Thursday, he was produced before the Sunamganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, which ordered his immediate incarceration pending further trial.
The suspect is the son of Amir Uddin, the primary orchestrator of the assault who is already in judicial custody. The case has horrified the local community due to the extreme depravity of the methods used to interrogate the young victim over a minor alleged theft.
A Campaign of Brutality Over a Silver Anklet
The victim, Hafiz Uddin, a fatherless youth who supports himself through the arduous task of scavenging coal and timber from the Jadukata River, was abducted on the evening of 29 December. The assailants, led by Amir Uddin, accused the boy of stealing a silver anklet belonging to Amir’s infant daughter. Despite the lack of evidence, Hafiz was dragged into a local shop and restrained.
What transpired was a night of systematic torture. Seeking a forced confession, the attackers reportedly drove needles under Hafiz’s fingernails and toenails. The violence escalated to include the use of pliers to crush his digits and sustained blunt force trauma. According to the case statement, the perpetrators used chilled water from a refrigerator to shock the boy back to consciousness whenever he fainted from the pain, ensuring the ordeal continued.

Judicial Progress and Police Commitment
Following the filing of a formal complaint by the victim’s uncle, Abdur Rahman, the police have prioritised the case. ABM Zakir Hossain, the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Sunamganj, confirmed on Friday that multiple specialised teams are currently deployed to track down the remaining fugitives.
“The level of cruelty inflicted upon this fatherless child is intolerable,” the SP remarked, adding that the police would ensure a watertight case is presented to the court. The investigation is now focusing on gathering forensic evidence from the shop where the torture occurred and documenting the long-term physical damage sustained by Hafiz. Local human rights advocates have called for a fast-track trial to serve as a deterrent against vigilante violence and the exploitation of vulnerable orphans in rural districts.
