US Urges Citizens to Leave Iran Immediately

The United States has issued an urgent call for its citizens to leave Iran without delay as the country’s internal unrest deepens and security conditions continue to deteriorate. On Monday, 12 January, the Virtual US Embassy for Iran released a heightened security alert advising American nationals to depart the country “without hesitation” and to make their own exit arrangements in the absence of direct US government assistance.

In its advisory, the embassy stressed that the United States has no operational diplomatic mission inside Iran, severely limiting its ability to provide consular or emergency support. As a result, Americans currently in the country were told to plan their departure independently and to act swiftly before conditions worsen further. The warning reflects growing concern over widespread protests, harsh government crackdowns, and the unpredictable nature of the security environment.

For those unable to leave Iran immediately due to personal, logistical, or legal reasons, the advisory outlined precautionary measures aimed at reducing risk. Individuals were urged to remain indoors, either within their own homes or in other secure buildings, and to avoid unnecessary travel or public gatherings. The embassy also warned of the possibility of future internet and communications blackouts, a tactic previously used during periods of unrest. Americans were therefore encouraged to prepare alternative methods of communication and contingency plans to stay in contact with family or trusted contacts abroad.

Where conditions permit, the advisory suggested that overland travel through neighbouring countries such as Armenia or Turkey could be considered as potential exit routes. However, travellers were cautioned to assess border security conditions carefully and to prioritise personal safety at all times.

Particular emphasis was placed on the situation of dual US–Iranian nationals. Iran does not recognise dual citizenship and treats such individuals solely as Iranian citizens. Consequently, those holding both nationalities were instructed to use Iranian passports when attempting to leave the country. The embassy further warned that presenting a US passport or any evidence of ties to the United States could be sufficient grounds for detention or interrogation by Iranian authorities.

The advisory comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. In response to ongoing protests and reports of severe repression, the administration of President Donald Trump has continued to warn of potential military action against Iran. While the White House has stated that diplomacy remains the preferred path to resolving the crisis, it has also made clear that more forceful options remain on the table.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that President Trump believes in keeping “all options open”. She noted that, as commander-in-chief, the president retains a wide range of responses, including air strikes, should the situation demand it. At the same time, she emphasised that diplomatic engagement is still being pursued.
