Bangladesh’s border security forces have thwarted an attempted illegal crossing into India, arresting four young men, including an alleged human trafficker, near the Chapainawabganj frontier. The operation highlights ongoing concerns over cross-border human trafficking and the vulnerabilities of jobseekers drawn into risky migration routes by false promises of employment abroad.
According to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the arrests took place at around 7:00 pm on Wednesday, 14 January, in the Bokchar border area of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila. Acting on specific intelligence, members of the 53rd BGB Battalion conducted a targeted operation roughly 200 yards inside Bangladeshi territory from the zero line, the demarcation point along the international boundary. During the raid, three Bangladeshi nationals attempting to cross into India illegally were detained alongside the individual accused of facilitating their journey.
The information was confirmed in a press statement issued to the media by Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Mustafizur Rahman, Commanding Officer of the 53rd BGB Battalion. He stated that the alleged trafficker, identified as Md Shahin, is a resident of Bokchar village and the son of Ebadul Islam. Preliminary interrogation suggests that Shahin had been organising the clandestine movement of people across the border for financial gain.
The three other detainees were identified as Md Mizanur Rahman from Chandpur Lahlamari in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj, Shafiqul Islam Munna from Assam Colony in Rajshahi city, and Md Tarajul Islam from Durgapur village in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur district. All three reportedly admitted that they had planned to travel to Chennai, India, with Shahin’s assistance, where they had been promised work as construction labourers, specifically as masons.
BGB officials noted that such trafficking networks often exploit unemployed or underemployed young men by offering them overseas jobs without legal documentation, exposing them to serious risks including exploitation, detention, or worse once across the border. Lieutenant Colonel Rahman reiterated that human trafficking is a grave criminal offence and assured that BGB operations against such networks would continue with heightened vigilance along border areas.
Following their arrest, all four individuals were handed over to Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station for further legal proceedings. Police sources indicated that necessary steps were being taken to initiate cases under relevant laws governing human trafficking and illegal border crossings.
