Two Bangladeshis killed in pickup truck accident in Malaysia

In a heartbreaking incident in Malaysia, two Bangladeshi workers lost their lives, while another sustained serious injuries in a road accident, once again raising concerns about the safety of migrant workers in the country.

The accident occurred on Saturday, 17 January, at approximately 2:25 pm local time on the Jalan Felda Selancar–Felda Redang road near Kampung Pervira Jaya in Rompin district, Pahang. According to local media reports, a pickup truck lost control and overturned, resulting in the fatalities.

The deceased have been identified as Md. Kader, 34, and Md. Dalim, 30, both employed at a local palm oil plantation. Another Bangladeshi worker, who was also in the vehicle, suffered critical injuries and was immediately transported to hospital for emergency treatment.

Superintendent Sharif Shai Sharif Mandoi of the Rompin District Police confirmed the incident. He stated that the vehicle involved, a Daihatsu pickup, was carrying four foreign workers transporting pesticides from Felda Redang to Felda Selancar. Two workers, including the driver, were seated in the front, while the other two, including the deceased Dalim, were in the rear of the truck.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle while the pickup was in motion. During the manoeuvre, the vehicle veered off the road into a roadside ditch and overturned. Both Kader, who was in the front seat, and Dalim, seated at the rear, were killed instantly. The third worker at the back was seriously injured, while the driver survived with minor injuries.

The injured worker has been admitted to the Red Zone of Segamat Hospital, where he is receiving intensive care. The bodies of the two deceased have been sent to Muadzam Shah Hospital for autopsy. Police investigations into the exact cause of the accident are ongoing.

This tragic event has once again highlighted the urgent need to ensure the safety and welfare of migrant workers, particularly during transportation to and from workplaces. Experts have stressed the importance of strict adherence to vehicle safety regulations, especially when carrying hazardous materials or heavy loads.
