In a targeted operation along the Dhaka–Chattogram highway, the Highway Police in Comilla have apprehended two militants in possession of a firearm. The operation took place on Monday night at around 9:00 PM near the Madhaiya Bus Station in Chandina Upazila, involving the Dhaka-bound passenger bus Asia Aircon. Authorities recovered a foreign-made pistol, two magazines, and a single round of ammunition from the suspects.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday morning, Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin of the Eliotganj Highway Police Station stated that all seized weapons and equipment have been securely placed under police custody. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects were attempting to transport the firearms illegally from the Comilla border to Dhaka.
The arrested individuals have been identified as follows:
| Name | Age | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Habibur Rahman Shakil | 33 | Monairkandi Village, Sonargaon Upazila, Narayanganj District |
| Mohammad Chishti | 42 | Laxmankhola Area, Bandar Upazila, Narayanganj District |
Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin elaborated on the operation, stating: “The raid was conducted based on confidential intelligence. Our initial assessment indicates that the weapons were intended for illegal use or distribution in connection with electoral activities in Dhaka. Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the firearms and their potential recipients.”
According to police sources, legal action is being taken against the detainees, while inquiries continue to establish whether others are involved in the illicit operation. During the operation, the bus driver and assistant passengers were also questioned as part of the preliminary investigation.
The swift action has heightened security awareness among passengers and residents in the Madhaiya Bus Station area. Highway Police officials emphasised that systematic and regular operations such as this play a critical role in curbing both militant activity and the illegal flow of weapons.
Security experts have highlighted that timely, intelligence-driven interventions significantly reduce potential threats to public safety. They noted that coordinated efforts between local and central police authorities can serve as an effective deterrent against terrorism and criminal activity nationwide.
