In a recent coordinated operation in Kapasia Upazila, Gazipur, authorities seized a significant number of heavy machinery and vehicles involved in the illegal extraction of soil. The operation, carried out jointly by local administration and law enforcement agencies, led to the recovery of three excavators, seven dump trucks, and two trolleys. A total of 22 individuals, including contractors, labourers, and truck drivers, were apprehended and subsequently handed over to Kapasia Police Station.
According to police and local sources, the operation targeted three separate areas within the Upazila where unauthorised soil removal from agricultural and government-owned land had been taking place. The primary objective of the raid was to curb illicit activities that have not only endangered farmland but also disrupted local irrigation channels and waterways.
Kapasia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Alam stated that the suspects were interrogated on-site before being formally transferred to the police station. “Two separate cases have been filed in connection with the incident,” he added, confirming that all detainees have been presented before the court. OC Alam emphasised the importance of such operations: “These measures are crucial for protecting both local farmland and the environment. The administration is committed to taking strict action against illegal activities.”
Local farmers welcomed the initiative, highlighting the adverse effects of unlawful soil extraction. They reported that their fields have been severely damaged, soil levels have dropped, crop yields have declined, and irrigation canals have suffered destruction. The community expressed hope that the authorities would continue to conduct similar operations in the future to safeguard agricultural land.
The table below summarises the key details of the operation:
| Type of Item / Action | Quantity | Notes |

Officials participating in the joint operation have stated that similar crackdowns will continue to prevent illegal excavation in the future. They have warned the local populace that any unauthorised removal or transport of soil will not be tolerated. The administration is prioritising the protection of farmland and the environment, and this operation is being cited as a successful example of effective coordination between law enforcement and local authorities.
Such proactive measures are expected to play a vital role in preserving agricultural resources, safeguarding the environment, and serving the wider public interest in the years to come.
