Sherpur, 30 January 2026: A tragic incident unfolded in Sherpur on Thursday night when the lifeless body of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shahinul Islam, 43, was discovered hanging inside his rented accommodation. Authorities reported that the body was recovered around 11:00 pm from a flat in the Girdanarayanpur area of the municipal town.
Shahinul, a native of Tebirchar village in Ranagacha Union of Jamalpur Sadar Upazila, was the son of the late Shamsul Haque and a father to one child.
According to Md. Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) in Sherpur, preliminary investigations suggest that Shahinul’s death may have resulted from mental health-related issues.
Incident Details
Police sources stated that ASI Shahinul joined Sherpur Sadar Police Station approximately seven months ago. He lived with his wife and child in a rented house located just across the road from the police station. On Thursday morning, his wife, Maksuda Parvin, took their child to their parental home in the village. Shahinul returned from duty at 2:00 pm but was unable to reach his wife by phone.
Later that evening, when relatives went to check on him, they found his room locked from the inside. After repeated calls went unanswered, they broke open the door with assistance and discovered Shahinul hanging from a ceiling fan using a scarf.

Reactions and Observations
Upon receiving the report, officers from Sherpur Police, including Additional SP Md. Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan and Additional SP (Sadar Circle) Nasrin Akter, inspected the scene. Shahinul’s wife informed police that he had been under psychiatric treatment and regularly took prescribed medication.
Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Jahangir Alam of Sherpur Sadar Police Station commented that Shahinul had never displayed signs of severe mental distress in his interactions and described the incident as extremely sorrowful.
Md. Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan added that Shahinul was taken to Sherpur District Hospital upon discovery, where doctors confirmed his death. Legal procedures are currently underway, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.
The sudden passing of ASI Shahinul Islam has left colleagues, neighbours, and the local police community in deep shock.
